No smoke with this fire: Save80 Stoves for Lesotho
In Lesotho, a small, landlocked and mountainous country of in southern Africa, the people usually cook their food on open fires inside their huts. The smoke those fires produce pollutes the environment and homes – and it impairs people’s health. As part of Deutsche Post DHL Group’s environmental protection program, GoGreen, ‘Save80 Stoves’ sees us deliver high-efficiency wood-burning stoves to rural villages in Lesotho. The project is a pioneering carbon reduction project sponsored entirely by Deutsche Post DHL Group. Apart from the important social aspect, the aim is to generate quality carbon credits at affordable prices to meet the Group’s carbon credit demand.
Less wood, less smoke
Since July 2010, Deutsche Post DHL Group has financed and coordinated the delivery of some 2,500 high-efficiency Save80 wood-burning stoves to Lesotho’s rural villagers. Designed for local needs, they come with a set of special pots and a thermal ‘wonderbox’ for cooking with retained heat. And true to their name, they use 80% less firewood than traditional cooking. “Less wood means less smoke – and a huge cut in CO2. Switching to Save80 stoves lets the people of Lesotho keep with the old while embracing the new. This is the key to the project’s success,” says Guido.
Working with a leading carbon offset provider atmosfair, a Germany-based company, Deutsche Post DHL Group will supply some 10,000 stainless steel stoves to Lesotho villages by the end of 2012. Aiming for the highest environmental and social standards, the project is set to run over 10 years and has been put forward for certification under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Gold Standard, the global benchmark for credit mitigation projects. Expected to start in 2012, the carbon credits generated will be used to offset around 20,000 tons of emissions annually as part of our GOGREEN carbon-neutral shipping service.
If the environment wins, everyone wins
Project Save80 brings benefits all round. For the Group, it means high quality, low-priced carbon credits. It pushes take-up of our GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service, shows we are frontrunners in carbon reduction and helps customers meet their own environmental targets. In terms of the environment, it has a three-fold effect: curbing deforestation, land erosion and air pollution. And for people in Lesotho it means less time gathering firewood, less exposure to smoke-related health risks, and greater access to new stove assembly and maintenance jobs.
