Green products & services
To meet our customers' needs we are offering a growing portfolio of green products and services. The so-called GoGreen products and services include everything from Carbon Reports to Green Optimization or Climate Neutral Services.
Transparency along the supply chain
The product Carbon Report provides business customers with an individual report of their greenhouse gas emissions generated by their Deutsche Post DHL transports.
We offer an additional reporting product for our customers in the GLOBAL FORWARDING, FREIGHT and EXPRESS division - the "Carbon Dashboard" - an online version of the Carbon Report. The product's special simulation feature helps customers understandthe relationship between their emission footprint and their choices of transport mode and product type.
As of 2014 the emission calculation for Carbon Reports is based on the current product standards "Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product Lifecycle Accounting and Reporting". Thus further relevant greenhouse gas emissions besides CO2 are reported along the supply chain and customers get transparency on upstream emissions from energy and fuel. Additionally, the Carbon Reports for customers from EXPRESS and GLOBAL FORWARDING, FREIGHT follow the current European standard EN 16258.
The new accounting and reporting standards result in an improved transparency and support customers in controlling their logistic chain's environmental impact and costs. The calculation methodology for Carbon Reports is annually verified by an independent auditing company.
Green Optimization along the entire supply chain
Since the inception of our GoGreen program, we have been able to build industry-leading knowledge and expertise in the area of eco-efficient logistics processes. We also share this competency with our customers through our Green Optimization product and service offering, helping them minimize the environmental impact of their business activities. This means working with customers to minimize the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions generated from their transport and logistics services, for instance, or helping customers find ways to reduce waste or save water at their facilities.
Our Green Optimization measures are designed first and foremost to minimize the customer’s greenhouse gas emissions or other negative impacts on the environment. These levers must offer additional savings potentials that go beyond what the customer would have otherwise been able to achieve without our support.
Offsetting emissions with Climate Neutral products and services
As of 2014 we offer GoGreen as a climate neutral service to our customers. Calculation and offsetting of emissions from transport and handling are based on the "Product Lifecycle Accounting and Reporting Standard" from the well-known Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Thus the climate neutral GoGreen service covers CO2 and further relevant greenhouse gas emissions as well as emissions from the production and distribution of energy and fuels. This increases GoGreen's emission reduction through external climate protection projects.
We transported a total of 2.12 billion climate-neutral shipments in 2014 (previous year: 2.37 billion). A significant growth in climate-neutral shipments was seen in our express and parcel business, while climate-neutral volumes in our mail business decreased. In terms of total volumes, the share of climate-neutral shipments increased in 2014, with climate-neutral shipments accounting for 3% of Express division volumes and 12% of volumes in the PeP division. The emission calculation and offsetting for GoGreen is verified by SGS, an independent-third party audit company: SGS Verification Statement.
We continued to develop our project in Lesotho in the reporting year. As part of this project, we distribute high-efficiency stoves, which reduce the amount of firewood necessary for cooking and as a result, reduce environmentally harmful emissions.
