Our partnership with Teach For All
The sustainability and innovative power of our economy and our society depends on a strong educational system and the targeted development of the next generation of young professionals. To this end, Deutsche Post DHL Group launched a global partnership with Teach For All, a network of more than 35 independent partner organizations around the world which pursue the common goal of improving education, expanding educational opportunity and addressing the problem of educational inequity.
As part of our commitment, we provide support to Teach For All's global parent organization as well as to ten national organizations in Germany, India, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Spain, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Malaysia. The newest partnerships, with Teach For Bangladesh and Teach For Malaysia, were launched in March 2015. Our support for these partner organizations includes financial assistance, donations, and the hands-on involvement of our employees.
Teach For All, committed to addressing the worldwide problem of educational inequity, is driven by the idea that every child, regardless of their parents’ socio-economic status, should have access to quality education. To this end, Teach For All partner organizations recruit and train exceptional university graduates and young professionals to serve as teachers ("teaching participants") for two years at a school in a high-need community.

The Teach For All approach brings double benefits. While students improve their academic performance over the short/medium term, the teaching participants take on responsibility as agents of change, expand their horizons and build their leadership skills.
Teach For All is confident that teaching participants, after completing the program, will remain active advocates for equal educational opportunity and help shape the future of education as professionals in education, the public sector, business or the non-profit world. Today, Teach For All has over 49,500 alumni, many of whom are in leadership positions or on track to become leaders in their fields. In the 9 years since it launched, Teach For All network partners have placed more than 75,000 teaching participants in teaching assignments around the world, who've reached more than 9 million students.

Our employees get involved locally
Many of the Teach For All network partners are new, fast-growing organizations who need support in establishing management systems and processes, and we get involved here, too. As an example, we took our First Choice method, something that we continuously apply to optimize our own processes, and adapted it to the needs of an educational organization. Based on this, we then conducted a series of workshops with the Teach For All network partners.
We also established mentoring programs for both teaching participants and high school students designed to provide support in the areas of personal development and career guidance. In 2015, approximately 1,300 of our employees took part in more than 100 partnership activities.
The CV (resume) is at the heart of any job application. And if you can't write a resume, you won't get an apprenticeship either. But how should a 15 or 16 year-old describe and document his/her experience so far? What kinds of experiences should be included in the resume – and which are better left out? As part of the "CV check" 170 students at Teach First Deutschland (TFD) partner schools had the opportunity to meet with employees of an international company and learn the basics of writing a successful resume. Deutsche Post DHL Group employees spent several hours showing students how to create and/or improve their resumes. With a maximum of two students per mentor, many participants received intensive one-on-one support and instruction. The resume training sessions were held at various TFD partner schools and were also attended by teachers and TFD Fellows.
In their jobs as logistics managers, finance or marketing experts, they carry considerable responsibility, make far-reaching decisions and rush from one meeting to the next. Thirteen managers from DHL Spain nevertheless found time to support a group of Fellows from Empieza por Educar. Over the course of a six month period, the DHL managers met with their mentees to talk about motivation, leadership, self-management and other career success factors. For the managers it was a chance to not only share their own experience, but to learn from the Fellows. Mentors gained insight into the Fellows' work at schools in high-need communities, and established relationships with these highly educated, ambitious young people who represent the next generation of leaders.
English is an important business language just about anywhere in the world. In the Philippines, too, children begin learning English at a young age. In September 2014, 40 third-graders at the "Nueve de Febrero" elementary school in Mandaluyong (Metro Manila) received a few hours of instruction from an especially capable guest teacher: Yati Abdullah, Country Manager of DHL Express Philippines. Instead of running her large country organization, Yati spent a half day teaching English class, reading stories and talking with the children. The special event was part of the Teach for the Philippines initiative "Leader's Week", which invites managers from the private sector to schools to teach and interact with school children. The event is less about introducing new subject matter, and more about exposing children to different life/career paths. Of course Yati impressed upon the students the value of learning a foreign language, and how important this is in the working world. In the classroom, Yati was supported by Teach for the Philippines Fellow Karleen Zambas and other teachers.
Sometime around 300 B.C., India gave birth to the decimal system, including the number zero, without which mathematics or computer science, as we know them today, could not exist. The penchant for numbers persists today, with India home to a thriving IT industry. Still, having the chance to acquire computer skills is by no means a given for India’s school children. DHL Express responded by conducting a Computer Workshop for 30 students of a Teach For India partner school at its headquarters in Mumbai in September 2014. 35 employees from the IT and Customer Service teams at DHL Express took part in the educational event. While the workshop instructor explained the basics of hardware and software, each TFI student sat together with a DHL employee and practiced applying the newly-acquired knowledge on a laptop.
Partnership with Empieza por Educar in Spain – Change Management Workshop for Fellows
Change in the workplace is often necessary, but can also be painful if one is forced to suddenly comply with new rules and give up familiar processes. Designing and implementing change processes is at the heart of the management challenge – and a very compelling topic for tomorrow's leaders. So it's no surprise that the Change Management workshops conducted by DHL Spain over the last four years for Empieza por Educar Fellows are usually fully booked. The most recent workshop, on October 25, 2014, attracted 30 Fellows to a Empieza por Educar partner school in Madrid.
Partnership with Teach for the Philippines – Read-Along Day at the Holy Spirit Elementary School in Quezon City
50 first-graders at the Holy Spirit Elementary School in Quezon City, Metro Manila's largest city, looked on in amazement on February 28, 2014 as their teachers suddenly took a break and five DHL volunteers took over the class. The volunteers proceeded to read two children's stories aloud – "Sandpaper" and "The Shy Rooster" – and encouraged the kids to follow along in their own books. Looking at the text while the story is read aloud is a great way for kids to ease into reading, which is why Teach for the Philippines conducts monthly read-along days in cooperation with the Filipino cable TV channel DZMM TeleRadyo.
Partnership with Teach First Deutschland – Business4Fellows Seminar
The Teach First Deutschland Fellows are all outstanding university graduates, and they come from a wide range of backgrounds and academic disciplines. But for many Fellows, the inner-workings of a large private-sector corporation – how it manages processes and coordinates the work of so many different people and departments – is largely unknown territory. To help fill this knowledge gap, Deutsche Post DHL Group conducted a 5-day seminar entitled Business4Fellows in October 2014 at Group headquarters in Bonn. The seminar gave 18 Fellows valuable insight into several aspects of the business and covered topics such as leadership, strategic planning, finance, and change management. This was the fourth time that Deutsche Post DHL Group conducted the Business4Fellows seminar.
Partnership with Teach for the Philippines – Maintenance Work at the Holy Spirit Elementary School in Quezon City
As part of its week-long "Brigada Eskwela" campaign, the Philippines Department of Education calls on volunteers every year to help with basic maintenance and renovation work at the country's schools. On May 23, 2014, forty DHL Philippines employees ranging from couriers to managers responded to the call and gathered at the Holy Spirit Elementary School in Quezon City to lend a hand. By the time they left the Teach for the Philippines partner school in the evening, furniture had been repaired and cleaned, classrooms painted and outdoor areas groomed.
Partnership with Teach For India – Visit to Blue Dart Headquarters
Dressed in their dapper school uniforms, and a bit shy at first, a total of 41 students from the Shivner Vidya Mandir school, a Teach For India partner school in Mumbai, visited Blue Dart headquarters on January 25, 2014. For most of the children it was their first visit to a company. The initial shyness soon gave way to curiosity and the young visitors began asking their smart questions: What happens in a company like this? What are the computers used for? How does the driver find his way through the urban jungle of Mumbai? What does a manager do all day? The Blue Dart team received and answered the questions patiently, providing the students their first impressions of the business world. The students were most interested in the drawing contest ("The India of My Dreams") which gave them a chance to showcase their artistic talents.
Partnership with Teach For India – Career Perspective for Young People
During the "Teach For India Leader's Week" from January 27-31, 2014, nine managers from DHL and Blue Dart took time out from work to visit TFI partner schools in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Delhi, where they teamed up in the classroom with Teach For India Fellows. The lesson plan included one very important topic: career planning. The young listeners were transfixed as managers spoke from first-hand working-world experience. They were most interested in learning about the entrance requirements for various career/occupational tracks – and, of course, how to become a manager!
Partnership with Teach First Deutschland – Mentoring "Chance4you" Students
As a Teach First Deutschland (TFD) sponsor, Deutsche Post DHL Group provides TFD with both financial and non-material support. Group employees also get involved directly in the partnership. One example is the "Chance4you" mentoring program, which involves Deutsche Post DHL employees mentoring students in grades 8 to 10 at TFD partner schools over a period of 15 months. Mentors support students as they grapple with the challenges of choosing an occupation and planning their futures. With their wealth of life experience – and a large dose of dedication and empathy – mentors act as trusted advisors whom students can consult on both everyday matters and "bigger" questions about the future. Mentors and mentees can also rely on support from teachers and TFD Fellows, who help coordinate the Chance4you program in their respective schools. Chance4you has been a tremendous success since its launch in 2010.
Partnership with Enseñá por Argentina – Creating a Better Learning Environment
From November 19 - 20, 2014, over 40 volunteers from DHL Argentina met with Fellows from Enseñá por Argentina at the "Asuncion de la Virgen" school in San Fernando. As part of Global Volunteer Day – the worldwide volunteer initiative across Deutsche Post DHL Group –volunteers gave classrooms a new coat of paint, performed basic maintenance, and helped create a more pleasant and supportive learning environment.
Partnership with Enseñá por Argentina – Internships for LIDER.AR
The non-governmental organization LIDER.AR, founded by Enseñá por Argentina alumnus Agustina Faustin, organizes internships for students unable to land a traineeship/internship on their own. For the students the benefits are clear: the internships boost not only knowledge, but self esteem. In July 2014 two students began three-month internships in the Customer Service and Operations departments at DHL Global Forwarding in Argentina. One intern performed so well that he was later offered a job.
Partnership with Enseña Ecuador – Co-branding Campaign for Greater Visibility
DHL Ecuador created a co-branding campaign to generate publicity for its partner organization Enseña Ecuador. After adjustments to the electronic invoicing platform, DHL invoices and receipts now feature a clearly visible reference to the partnership, complete with Enseña Ecuador logo.
Partnership with Enseña Chile – Students Experience Modern Art
What would life be without art? Considerably less rich and a lot less colorful! Art is simply part of being human, which is why everyone should be able to experience it. This was the motivation for DHL Chile employees to take part in two field trips on December 9 and 17, 2014 together with students and Fellows at Enseña Chile partner schools. Their destination was an exhibition of works by French contemporary artist Christian Boltanski at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts) in Chile's capital city Santiago. Boltanski, an internationally renowned artist best known for his room installations, has exhibited around the world, including two exhibitions at the documenta in Germany. The modern art made a lasting impression on the students, many of whom had never been to a museum before.
