Deutsche Post DHL Group calls employees to worldwide volunteering initiative
- Global Volunteer Day specifically supports social projects worldwide
- In 2014 over 108,000 employees participated in 117 countries
Deutsche Post DHL Group is calling on employees around the world to take part in its annual Global Volunteer Day (GVD) initiative. Over several days, employees are invited to support social projects in close cooperation with non-profit organizations. The GVD today embraces all Deutsche Post DHL Group divisions worldwide. The initiative attracted some 108,000 participants in 117 countries last year. The timeframe for this year's Global Volunteer Day activities will be September 17th - 27th, although many employees serve as volunteers all year round. They engage regularly on issues such as the environment, education and employability, or support disadvantaged people as well as charitable organizations. With this, they also contribute to the Deutsche Post DHL Group sustainability strategy under the motto "Living Responsibility". The Group supports these long-term activities with a dedicated funding instrument which provides financial support to selected employee projects year-round. Independently to Global Volunteer Day, each year employees can apply to the fund on behalf of "their" regular project.
"As a globally operating company, we aim to take on responsibility towards the environment and society throughout all our business operations. This leitmotif is an integral part of Deutsche Post DHL Group's corporate strategy, Strategy 2020," says Christof Ehrhart, Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility at Deutsche Post DHL Group. "Many of our employees are active throughout the whole year, but during the dedicated period of Global Volunteer Day we see an additional level of commitment from them. Socially engaged employees are not only giving back to the communities in which we conduct business, but also bringing fresh ideas and perspectives back into the company."

A wide range of projects
There's no limit to the ideas and projects that make up Global Volunteer Day. They include classroom renovations, cleaning activities in parks, or special events in children's care facilities or homes for the elderly. For many years now, Deutsche Post DHL Group and SOS Children's Villages have cooperated closely to help improve educational opportunity and employability for children and youths. Building on this, employees recently conducted a first job application training with young people from SOS Children's Village. In Thailand, colleagues worked with the national Environmental Organization to help with their reforestation of local woods. And in Latin America, many employees helped to rebuild houses previously destroyed by natural disasters together with the organization "Techo".
Targeted support for local projects
Global Volunteer Day began in 2008 in Asia, where Deutsche Post DHL Group employees donated their time and energy to support local projects within a specific time window. The framework for the activity is Deutsche Post DHL Group's Corporate Responsibility program. It aims to balance economic, social and environmental interests and to guide the company's efforts to act responsibly.
