Opening ceremony of the new logistics center*
"Whereas a few years ago DHL was basically known as a courier company, DHL Freight, our division which deals with land-based transport, is now the company's biggest, making up around 65 percent of our total turnover," explained Mati Kärt, a member of the board of DHL Estonia and the director of DHL Freight. Kärt says the need for a new center arose from the growth in the volume of goods being transported and from the fact that more and more clients are looking for holistic logistics chain management in addition to transport services.
Kärt says the new logistics center will allow them to process large quantities of goods more efficiently: while only 9 loading bridges were available in the previous terminal, the new center boasts 32. This will improve the time it takes to process goods and reduce supply times.
The first stage of the logistics center comprises a 3000 sqm terminal and a 4000 sqm warehouse. Potential future expansion of the terminal and warehouse space has been taken into account, with the center's 30,000 sqm of territory presenting plenty of opportunities. Investment in the construction of the center exceeded 100 million kroons.
"The center is very modern and meets all of the latest standards," Kärt said. "It will not only provide our clients with a higher quality of service, but also a fantastic working environment for our staff." Kärt says that the opening of the center in Tallinn marks the end of a significant stage of development for the company in the Baltic States as a whole - with similar logistics centers having been opened in Latvia and Lithuania in 2007 and earlier this year as well.
The grand opening of the center took place at 3.00 pm 26.02 and was attended by almost 300 DHL Freight clients, partners and investors and the center's builders. Giving the opening speech will be DHL Freght Managing Director, UK/IE, Nordics, CEE & EMA Wolfgang W. Dölger.
