DHL offers new concept for improved supply to retailersHolzwickede/Bonn, 11/15/2007, 10:30 AM CET
On November 15, 2007, DHL Exel Supply Chain officially put into operation Germany's most state-of-the-art sorting equipment for image and sound media. Alongside its customer Karstadt, DHL introduced the media sorter at its Holzwickede site near Dortmund to an invited audience of specialists.
The device was especially developed by DHL in order to supply retailers with faster, more flexible and additional services. The new sorting machine is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It sets the benchmark with its considerably higher productivity levels: each hour up to 17,500 CDs or DVDs can be sorted, labeled, packaged, and prepared for dispatch to retail outlets. Stefan Kurrle, responsible for DHL Exel Supply Chain business in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, described the media sorter as an important strategic investment, "In the fiercely competitive media industry success today depends largely on quality, speed, and cost-effectiveness. As an experienced retail trade logistics partner we have reacted to this market requirement by introducing the new sorting device with its highly advanced functionality. In this way we are offering Karstadt, plus our other customers, a future-proof solution."
Jan-Christoph Maiwaldt, member of the management team at Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH, Essen confirmed, "The new equipment not only guarantees that our branches are regularly supplied with entertainment media over the long term but it also means we can build on our position as a wholesaler to other commercial operations. Working closely with our partner DHL, we are already able to supply DVDs and CDs to more than 360 outlets belonging to other retail companies."
The design of the equipment enables a large quantity to be processed within the shortest time possible. Moreover, the new technology supplies items for retailers which save on space and are sorted by article. Six hundred supply contracts can be processed simultaneously and additional customer requirements such as pricing or product tagging can also be catered for. A further feature of the media sorter is its flexibility in adapting to varying product sizes and special packaging. By virtue of its modular design the device can also be expanded to handle higher quantities and larger orders.
