DHL will operate new Logistics Center in Unna
- Construction begins in mid-January 2007
- Innovative "logistics campus" concept
DHL Exel Supply Chain announced today that it will build a new 60,000 square meter Logistics Center in Unna. Starting in the fall of 2007, the contract logistics specialist of the Deutsche Post World Net Group will operate a so-called "logistics campus" here designed especially for customers of the consumer goods industry.
Construction on the first section will begin in mid-January. The decision for Unna signifies an expansion of DHL Exel Supply Chain's activities in the eastern Ruhr region, with the company planning to create up to 350 jobs by the end of 2007.
The concept of a "logistics campus", implemented by DHL for the first time at this location in Germany, is new. Large warehouse storage capacity as well as high standardizations in warehouse storage structure, IT solutions and logistics services are combined with the industry-specific orientation of the entire facility. This creates synergies and qualitatively high-value economic solutions for all partners through the consolidation of mail streams and the reduction of transport costs, among other things.
The standardized structure of the facility also allows DHL to react flexibly at any time to changing customer orders and to receive into store and handle larger amounts of goods in the warehouse. The site itself offers sufficient possibilities for expanding the Logistics Center for future customers.
Stefan Kurrle, the person responsible for DHL Exel Supply Chain in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, views the project as trend-setting: "Logistics is a growth market with a huge need for flexible and innovative solutions. In Unna, we are creating a facility where we can offer our customers an ideal overall concept, based on location, size and equipment. We are also planning the construction of additional campuses in Germany".
