Deutsche Post Enters Second LifeBonn, 05/03/2007, 11:30 AM CEST
Deutsche Post is starting off by giving users the opportunity to create their own postcards in the Post Tower photo studio and then sending them to recipients in the real world. The avatars (the users' virtual characters) can choose from existing motifs or they can turn their own photos from the Second Life world into greeting cards and add a personal message. Fast, safe and reliable as always, Deutsche Post will then deliver these messages to destinations anywhere in the world as real postcards.
In addition, Deutsche Post is launching a postcard contest to celebrate the opening of its virtual presence. Keeping in line with the motto "Summer, sun, vacation fun," all residents of Second Life are invited to create their own art works in the Post Tower. A jury will select the ten best entries, which will be put on display in the Post Tower gallery in June. A special highlight: these, too, can be sent as postcards to destinations in the real world.
Deutsche Post understands its activities in Second Life as far more than just a promotion for its own products. As Second Life continues to flourish as one of the most popular Web 2.0 applications the company sees its activities as a central and above all attractive platform for interpersonal dialog.
"Second Life has dynamically developed and gives an impressive keyhole view of the future. Here we can see what could be possible tomorrow - you might call it a virtual research center," says Bohlken. Deutsche Post will actively foster this development with the intention to make the future a better one for its customers. This emphasizes the company's position as an innovative communication service provider.
