Deutsche Post is saddened by the death of the former Chairman of the Deutsche Postgewerkschaft (German Posts and Telecommunications Trade Union), Kurt van Haaren. Van Haaren, who passed away in the night of July 14 at age 66, served as Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bundespost Postdienst and Deutsche Post AG from 1989 to 2001.
Chairman of the Board of Management Klaus Zumwinkel honored van Haaren for his steadfast attendance in the company's evolution over the years from a public authority to a global, commercially-independent enterprise. "His contribution was decisive to the success of the fundamental restructuring of Deutsche Post in the '90s in consensus with the social partners." Van Haaren always played a constructive role in finding the balance between the operational changes needed and the social well-being of postal employees.
Under van Haaren's chairmanship, the German Posts and Telecommunications Trade Union concluded the first employment pact with Deutsche Post in 1995. This was followed by others. The latest employment pact, concluded in 2003, is valid until 2008. The agreements allow the company to take further steps toward rationalization while preserving jobs.
