Five new welfare stamps have been issued in the stamp series "Für die Jugend" 2005. Famous German Tall Ships are the motif on the stamps this time. The presentation was made by the Minister of Finance, Hans Eichel, and the Minister for Family Affairs, Renate Schmidt, on the museum ship "Rickmer Rickmers" in the port of Hamburg on May 18, 2005. The first issue will appear on June 2, 2005, after which the special stamps will be available at all of Deutsche Post's larger retail outlets. The full amount of the surcharges will go to the charitable foundation "Stiftung Deutsche Jugendmarke e.V.". The money will pay for measures aimed at youth welfare in Germany.
The historical ships selected as motifs also relate to young people in terms of content. Young sailors completed their training as ocean-going sailors on the "Greif", which was launched in 1951. The former sailing training ship is today used by and large for excursions with young people from its home port of Greifswald. The schooner "Großherzogin Elisabeth", which dates from 1909 and is anchored in Elsfleth on the River Weser, is used today for sailing and training voyages. Like the training ship "Deutschland", which was launched in 1927, the four-masted bark "Passat" from Lübeck, which was built in 1911, and the freighter "Rickmer Rickmers", which was built in 1896, have also been used as training ships in the recent past.
The stamps with a surcharge will be offered with a denomination of 45 cents with a surcharge of 20 cents ("Greif" motif), as a 55-cent stamp with a surcharge of 25 cents ("Großherzogin Elisabeth", "Passat" and "Rickmer Rickmers" motifs) and as a stamp with a denomination of EUR 1.44 with a surcharge of 56 cents ("Schulschiff Deutschland" motif).
