Stamps for sport
Five new postage stamps support the German Sports Aid FoundationBonn, 02/10/2005, 10:30 AM CET
Thanks to the "Für den Sport" series of sports stamps, it is possible to send a letter and help German sport at the same time. The latest issues will be available on February 10, 2005, each stamp including a surcharge on the normal price that goes to the German Sports Aid Foundation (Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe). This year, the motifs of the five sports stamps (available in Deutsche Post retail outlets) pay tribute to the enthusiasm generated by international sporting events in Germany.
Two of the stamp motifs anticipate the excitement of the 2006 FIFA World CupTM. The football globe design by the Vienna artist André Heller can be seen on the stamp worth 55 cents, while the World Cup mascot, Goleo VI, adorns the 45-cent stamp. Three other motifs also show major international events in Germany's 2005 sporting calendar: The Nordic Ski World Championships in Oberstdorf (55 cents), the International German Gymnastics Festival in Berlin (55 cents) and the Fencing World Championships in Leipzig (144 cents).
The surcharge levied is 20, 25 or 56 cents, depending on the stamp. This money is used to support the work of the German Sports Aid Foundation, which promotes grass-roots sport and young talent in Germany. Leading sportspersons such as the swimmer Antje Buschschulte and the Nordic combined skier Ronny Ackermann are among those whose careers have been helped by the proceeds from these stamps.
Which is why Ronny Ackermann is working to promote their sale: He appears in advertising in Deutsche Post's 2,000 largest outlets, urging people to take out a year's subscription to surcharged postage stamps. The full surcharge from each stamp is donated to nonprofit organizations in Germany.
Another shining tribute to the 2006 World Cup is the 10-euro commemorative coin, which is made out of sterling silver (925/1000) and is being issued in parallel by the German finance minister. The coin, together with five Goleo VI and five football globe stamps, is available in Deutsche Post's latest World Cup Numis Sheet, a high-quality presentation set for collectors. The stamps bear the highly sought-after first-day "Berlin" postmark.
