Deutsche Post and Adobe cooperate for Stampit Web
Coming soon - PC franking direct from an Internet browserBonn/Unterschleissheim, 02/16/2005, 10:30 AM CET
From now on, Deutsche Post, working with software manufacturer Adobe Systems, will offer its customers STAMPIT WEB, a new approach to PC franking using the online marketplace eBay. STAMPIT WEB complements the popular existing PC franking software versions STAMPIT HOME and STAMPIT BUSINESS, which are already installed on more than 70,000 PCs. STAMPIT WEB now means that direct PC franking is possible without the need to install special software. All you need is an Internet browser and the free Adobe Reader for PDF documents, 500 million copies of which are installed throughout the world, reaching virtually every computer.
As part of the project, Deutsche Post has signed a cooperation agreement with Adobe Systems relating to Internet franking. To use STAMPIT WEB, users need a standard Internet browser and Adobe Reader 6.02 or higher. As a first step, the basic functions will be included in the web presence of the leading online marketplace eBay. After a successful auction, eBay sellers can frank their letters and small parcels directly using STAMPIT WEB. For parcels the service is currently not available yet. The service and scope of the product will be expanded in the following months and a dedicated web site www.stampit.de will be provided for franking items. eBay sellers will not have to pay any additional costs for the future STAMPIT WEB service.
Users can register after logging on via the Internet, and once their franking account has been activated, they can frank their items directly online from their PC. Topping up the franking account is done online, with payments debited from a bank account. For customers already using STAMPIT HOME or STAMPIT BUSINESS the new service is available free of charge with their existing franking account.
STAMPIT WEB has become technically possible thanks to the integration of Adobe LiveCycle Server technology. This is used to generate so-called intelligent PDF documents, turning the printing of "stamps" by Adobe Reader 6.02 or 7.0 into a secure process.
Ingo Bohlken, Managing Director Product Management MAIL: "As part of the cooperation, we want to pool our expertise to encourage further development of the technology in the field of online franking. With the Reader, we are basing our technology on standard software that is installed on virtually every PC, allowing us to offer our customers a straightforward solution for Internet franking without the need to install special software."
"STAMPIT WEB is an innovative solution and a good example of how our technology for intelligent PDF documents can be used to create customer-friendly business models via the Internet," explains Fritz Fleischmann, head of Adobe Systems GmbH and Managing Director for Central Europe.
