DHL invests in environmentally friendly delivery van fleet
- 70 natural gas (CNG) powered vehicles purchased
- Optimized parcel delivery van from IVECO
Deutsche Post World Net is stepping up its use of natural gas vehicles for parcel deliveries in Germany by DHL, its subsidiary for express deliveries and logistics services. The company has bought 70 delivery vans customized to meet its particular logistics needs. IVECO will deliver 50 vehicles in 2005.For the first time, the vehicles developed by IVECO combine increased loading capacity through a special body already in use in DHL fleet with an environmentally friendly natural gas engine. The extra loading capacity of the special body allows the number of transports to be kept at a minimum.
In addition, the IVECO natural gas engine meets the EEV emission standard, the most severe currently achievable by commercial vehicles. The 50 vehicles purchased for the parcel branch of DHL are the initial step of a natural gas fleet that will be expanded in the coming years. The first vehicles are expected to be delivered and enter in service in the second half of 2005. DHL is currently evaluating several cities as possible locations ensuring optimum operating conditions for the vehicles.
The new gas vehicles are part of the environmental commitment of Deutsche Post World Net and add to the group's various concrete efforts to optimize its logistics activities to become more and more environmentally friendly and sustainable. The environmental policy published in 2002 calls for Deutsche Post World Net to minimise the environmental impacts of its transport operations.
Core elements to this strategy are an optimised route planning to avoid empty trucks and improve capacity utilization, as well as a modern, well-maintained vehicle fleet and driver training. In inner-cities and conurbations, letters are delivered on foot or by bicycle. Diesel company cars in Germany are ordered with particle filters only subject to availability. In Sweden, customer requests have triggered the use of trucks powered with biogas. Gas vehicles also operate in Switzerland, the UK and France, while hybrid engines are being tested in the United States.Further information about the environmental strategies of Deutsche Post World Net can be found on the Internet at www.dpwn.de in the environment and society section.
