Dr Monika Wulf-Mathies, Head of Corporate Public Policy and Sustainability at Deutsche Post World Net, emphasises, "With the purchase of 170 natural gas vehicles within one and a half years, we are showing that we are putting our environmental guidelines into practice. We want transport, also under environmental aspects, to be as efficient and clean as possible."
This also includes, besides the use of natural gas vehicles and particulate filters, optimised route planning, a modern vehicle fleet as well as driver training on saving fuel. The company is also active in the field of future-orientated, sustainable mobility. In the FIDEUS project which is sponsored by the EU, the DHL express and logistics subsidiary is testing, together with automobile manufacturers, researchers and large cities, how inner-city areas with a high level of traffic can benefit from the new technology and optimised traffic management solutions.
DHL Express Germany will begin operation of the first fifty natural gas vehicles in five cities (Berlin, Munich, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart) from the autumn. The environmentally-friendly vehicles will be recognisable by the logo "Wir sind natürlich unterwegs" (We travel naturally).
The specially developed IVECO Daily van meets the strictest European emissions standards (EEV standard) and creates up to eight-five per cent less particulate matter compared to a diesel vehicle. It is hoped that especially congested areas with bad air quality will benefit from the environmentally-friendly vehicles.
