Working together for environmental protection
Deutsche Post and the City of Bonn to present environmental awardBonn, 03/16/2005, 10:30 AM CET
This year the City of Bonn and Deutsche Post will be announcing the first in a series of environmental awards. The award is intended as an incentive for more commitment to issues important to both the City of Bonn and local businesses: climate protection, nature conservation, resource conservation, energy consciousness and environmentally-sensitive transportation.
Eligible for the prize are Bonn residents or Bonn-based workers, clubs, associations, companies and initiatives. The prize, in the amount of Euro 5,000, is sponsored by Deutsche Post and will be offered every two years. The City of Bonn will take submissions and then narrow down the field of candidates, from which a jury will select the prize-winner.
Mayor Bärbel Dieckmann and Monika Wulf-Mathies, Head of the Policy and Sustainability Corporate Department at Deutsche Post World Net, introduced the initiative on Wednesday, March 16 at a meeting with the press in Bonn's Post Tower.
"As the site for UN facilities such as the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) or the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Bonn has a special responsibility to deal on the local level with global themes that will be shaping our future. Special thanks go to Deutsche Post which has joined the city in showing its support for local, sustainable environmental protection by sponsoring an environmental award," emphasized Mayor Dieckmann. "We cannot just think globally, but must also act locally and make our mark in Bonn."
"As a global logistics company we carry a special responsibility for responsible resource-use and its environmental impacts," added Wulf-Mathies. "We not only carry this responsibility globally. We want to add to our responsibility and engage in these issues locally by joining forces with and reaching out to the City of Bonn."

A three-person jury will judge the submissions and select the winner. Other jury members include Volker Kregel, head of the City of Bonn's Environmental Affairs department, and Monika Wulf-Mathies. Deadline for submissions is December 15, 2005.
