DHL invests 100 million euros in Bremen
- Construction of a new parcel center and a new high rack warehouse, and extensive modernization of existing production facilities
- 400 new jobs
- Enhancement of DHL's position as leading logistics provider for the mail order sector
DHL is investing around 100 million euros in the logistical infrastructure at its Bremen location. In the course of these activities, about 400 new jobs will be created. The express and logistics provider, part of Deutsche Post World Net, is building a new parcel center and a new high rack warehouse. At the same time, existing logistics centers in Bremen will be extensively modernized.
This was announced today at a press conference given by Dr. Peter Kruse, member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Post World Net responsible for the express business in Germany and Europe, together with Dr. Peter Gloystein, Mayor of Bremen and Senator for Finance and Ports. As Kruse explained: "Bremen will become one of the most modern locations within the DHL network. Our customers will benefit from further improvements in service quality."
The growth of the long-term DHL Bremen customer Tchibo was the trigger for this large-scale investment. The need for reliable long-term planning makes the expansion of DHL's logistical capacity in Bremen absolutely essential. Service quality will also be improved. It will now be possible for parcels to be packed up to 7 p.m. and still reach a recipient anywhere in Germany the next day. For deliveries within the region, the order picking time may be extended as late as 10 p.m.Bremen Mayor Dr. Peter Gloystein welcomes the investment by DHL in his State: "The cooperation between DHL and Tchibo has been a notable success story for Bremen for many years. Of course, we are especially pleased about the new jobs. This investment is further evidence of Bremen's competitiveness as a business location, and of our progressive, growth-oriented economic policy."
The expansion of the DHL infrastructure includes the construction of a new parcel center in the Hansalinie industrial park close to the A1 Autobahn in Hemelingen. The basic structure is in place, and state-of-the-art parcels sorting facilities will be installed in the next few weeks. At the beginning of August, the parcel center will be connected to the DHL network. At about the same time, work will begin on the construction of a new high rack warehouse with 34,000 pallet bays in Bremen's Cargo Center. DHL is also modernizing its two existing buildings in the Cargo Center. This will double the handling capacity of the logistics center from 45,000 to around 90,000 parcels per day, and when all building activities are complete, the dispatch volume from the Bremen location will increase by about 30percent to 200,000 parcels per day.
Deutsche Post Board Member Kruse thanked the Bremer Investitions-Gesellschaft mbH, and especially the WfG Bremer Wirtschaftsförderung GmbH, for their support of the investment plans, and also referred to DHL's qualities as an employer: "We have worked together as partners here in Bremen, with a view to further strengthening the city's economy. Together with the investment in our European air freight hub in Leipzig and the recently announced construction of our new logistics center in Greven, DHL has demonstrated once again its sense of social responsibility in creating jobs in Germany."
