Royal Mail is currently launching the online postage system 'SmartStamp' onto the British market. In developing the software the British postal company also used Deutsche Post's expertise and experiences. For the British market, Royal Mail adjusted the functionality and technology of STAMPIT's user interface for the 'SmartStamp' system.
As the first European postal company Deutsche Post launched PC franking, the so-called "internet stamp", onto the German market a good two years ago. STAMPIT, Deutsche Post's PC franking software, offers a practical solution to home offices as well as to small and medium-size enterprises. Around the clock and seven days a week, customers can simply and conveniently frank their postal items via the internet.
By using the existing STAMPIT system for 'SmartStamp' risks for Royal Mail, which might have been arisen whilst developing an independent solution, were able to be reduced. After just one year's development time Royal Mail can offer its customers the franking solution 'SmartStamp' quicker than planned. Co-operating with Deutsche Post has a decisive advantage. Many practical experiences have already been integrated into STAMPIT so that the British postal company is basing its computer franking on solid foundations. For German as well as for British internet postage stamps users only require a computer with internet access and an inkjet or laser printer. Postage is purchased at a virtual postage stamp counter on the internet and paid for by direct debit. If the postage account is used up then it can be refreshed up online at any time.
After STAMPIT's great success in Germany further European postal companies are also expressing their interest. After a successful test a contract between the Swiss Post and Deutsche Post regarding the licensing of the STAMPIT system was signed at the beginning of the last year.
