New DIGITALMARKE and enhanced service for registered letters
Nationwide utilization of new technologiesBonn, 12/10/2003, 10:30 AM CET
From January 1, 2004 onwards, it will be possible to use a new digital postmark, the DIGITALMARKE, to frank letter mail items at Deutsche Post's larger postal retail outlets. The stamp will be printed directly onto a label at postal retail outlets' sales counters and will be used for items posted there. The fact that the labels are counterfeit-proof ensures that a system is in place which has proven itself in a similar way in respect of PC franking. It will also be possible to continue using stamps only to frank letter mail items - mixed franking using stamps and the new DIGITALMARKE will also be available.
With special services, registered letters for instance, the necessary item barcode will be attached along with the DIGITALMARKE. There will no longer be any need to identify the items separately.
New technologies for special services that will simplify the handling of registered letters and will speed up the flow of data are to be introduced nationwide along with this innovation. Customers will, for instance, be able to establish the status of individual registered letters or indeed of several registered letters over the Internet or by telephone as early as the day after delivery.
When registered letters are delivered, the proof of delivery will in future be generated automatically based on the data that has been scanned in, keeping manual entry errors to an absolute minimum.
This innovation will create a new technology platform for new services and solutions in the mail sector. The overall project "Mechanization of mail special services" has been implemented as part of the Group-wide STAR value creation program.
