From the assembly line in Malaysia to the customer in Europe in forty-eight hours
DHL creates a tailor-made logistics solution for OSRAM shipments from Asia to EuropeBonn, 10/09/2003, 11:30 AM CEST
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH has commissioned DHL Air & Ocean with handling the distribution logistics from its factory in Penang (Malaysia) to Europe. DHL collects the shipments in Penang and arranges optimal container loading, customs clearance as well as the air transport to Frankfurt. DHL employees here label the goods and deliver them within forty-eight hours to OSRAM customers in Germany and Europe.
'We were convinced not only by the fact that DHL Danzas Air & Ocean gives us complete control of our shipments, but also that they ensure the quickest possible delivery of our time-critical goods within Europe,' says Dr Rolf Soukal, Supply Chain Management OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, explaining one of the co-operation's important advantages. In Penang the company manufactures semiconductor devices used for example in the automobile industry for light, sensor and visualisation applications.
With its 'Freight Control System' DHL ensures the rapid transfer of all shipment information, reducing the time between placing an order and delivery to a minimum. DHL collects the complete and ready packed products at the assembly line in the Penang factory. DHL employees here scan the parcels and forward the information via EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) to Frankfurt am Main. The aeroplane with the parcels lands there the next day before 13:00.
The direct transfer into DHL's distribution centre situated near the runway ensures the quickest possible delivery of the parcels. Just two hours after the aircraft has landed the goods are ready to be processed further. 'Integrating the processes for arriving and departing freight directly at the airport reduces the number of interfaces and shortens the transport routes,' explains Stefan Hartmann, Key Account Manager High Tech at DHL Danzas Air & Ocean. 'Customers thus not only save time, but also costs, because they do not need to have a warehouse in Frankfurt.'
In the distribution centre the parcels are compared with the data from Penang and labels for the further dispatch of the goods are automatically created and attached. Delivery in Europe occurs the following day and in fixed time windows so that end customers usually receive their shipments forty-eight hours after DHL Danzas Air & Ocean collects the goods in Penang. As soon as the shipment is delivered, OSRAM receives information regarding the delivery via EDI. Shipment status information can be tracked via the internet up to the end customer.
The 'Freight Control System' ensures full transparency for every individual parcel and the invoices, along the entire process chain. If required OSRAM can act at short notice and make new arrangements for the shipment up to 10:00 on the day of arrival in Frankfurt. Urgently required parts can thus be delivered to OSRAM's customers even the same day.
