DHL and Lufthansa Cargo: A successful partnership
For years DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo have maintained one of the sector's closest partnerships between an express service provider and an air cargo company.
The core of this partnership is an alliance between the two companies on several important intercontinental routes, which is managed by the joint venture Aerologic GmbH. Since summer 2004 DHL and Lufthansa Cargo have jointly served five routes: three routes between Europe and North America and two routes between Europe and Asia. Four to five flights per week start from the DHL hubs Cologne/Bonn, Brussels (Belgium) and East Midlands (Great Britain). The routes currently starting from Cologne/Bonn will be transferred to the future DHL Express Europe hub in Leipzig in the fall of 2007. MD11 cargo aircraft owned by Lufthansa Cargo are used on those intercontinental routes.
The successful cooperation offers both companies significant advantages. Since 2004 DHL has been able to offer its customers more frequent flights between the world's major economic regions while expanding reliably available capacities. Route management and flight times are geared to the requirements of DHL's express business. The alliance has allowed Lufthansa Cargo to optimize capacity utilization and expand network density by adding new routes. Both companies share available capacities on the five routes.
"The intercontinental alliance with Lufthansa Cargo has been a big success. We are experiencing high customer demand and have met or exceeded all of our objectives with respect to service quality and efficiency," said Charles Graham, CEO of DHL Aviation and member of the DHL Global Express Management Board. "It is now time to take this alliance to a new level through the creation of a joint air cargo company."
