A parcel on tour
Munich-born Sabine Dorfner lives and works in Shenzhen, China, for a number of years. Her sister, Iris, lives in Munich and will be celebrating her 30th birthday the day after tomorrow.
Unfortunately, Sabine can't travel to Germany for the birthday party due to work-related reasons. So she decides to send her sister a present with DHL Express. Follow our interactive tour to see which stations the parcel goes through in order to arrive on time for Iris' birthday in Munich.
Pick-Up in Shenzhen
Sabine Dorfner calls DHL to arrange the transport of her package from Shenzhen to Munich.
The service agent passes the order to a DHL courier.
Shortly afterwards the DHL Express courier arrives on Sabine Dorfner's doorstep. He accepts the parcel and scans the barcode on the parcel. The barcode contains the data that ensure the package reaches its final destination on time. The parcel is now entered into DHL's shipment tracking system so Sabine can call up the shipment's status online at any time.
Export in Shenzhen
The parcels from that day are consolidated at a DHL distribution center and then transported to the airport as a bundled consignment.
At Shenzhen airport the parcels go into the automated sort system where they are scanned and sorted by destination to the appropriate container.
A DHL truck now transports the consolidated parcels to the nearest hub in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong HUB
Hong Kong has the largest air hub for Asia, Australia and the Pacific region.
Every night thousands of employees start working: planes are checked and refuelled. Cargo loads are emptied; parcels are scanned electronically and passed through the huge sorting system before they are reloaded onto planes and transported onwards – including Iris' birthday surprise.
By 6 a.m. all the planes are on route to their destinations worldwide.
The DHL freight plane to Europe has taken off too - and, of course, not without Sabine Dorfner's parcel on board. The destination is Leipzig, Europe’s largest air hub.
Europe - Leipzig HUB
At Leipzig airport, the central hub for Europe and Africa, the shipments to Munich are rescanned, sorted and loaded onto another plane.
Finally, the plane that has Iris' birthday surprise on board takes off towards Munich, Germany.
Munich freight center
The parcel finally reaches Munich.
Via scan and conveyor belt it is sorted one last time for the fastest route to the recipient address and transported to the nearest DHL distribution center.
Here a DHL courier accepts the shipment, including Sabine's, using a hand scanner to read the barcode which then calculates the optimal route to the parcel's destination.
The DHL courier starts his daily route through Munich's city center.
At the time of delivery the DHL courier scans the shipment again to confirm it has been delivered and hands the parcel to Iris Dorfner. While Iris is unpacking her parcel her sister Sabine checks online that the present has arrived on time.
