A new cultural highlight
Beethoven concert hall in Bonn - A new vision is taking shape
Bonn needs a new, first-class concert hall - or better yet a building for music that is on par with the best in the world both achitecturally and acoustically. This conclusion of creative artists in Bonn, municipal representatives as well as federal and state governments and companies marked the beginning of the Beethoven concert hall project.
Deutsche Post AG, Deutsche Telekom AG and Deutsche Postbank AG are the first sponsors of the new concert hall. They have expressed their fundamental intention to take over the financing of the concert hall. Deutsche Post DHL assumed leadership of the planning of the building and coordinating the selection of an architect.
Ten internationally renowned architects were invited to brainstorm the project - in the form of plans and models. The best four designs were selected for a second phase. The next step was to take two of those four for a final round.
Deutsche Post DHL is responsible for the construction phase and a Beethoven foundation
Deutsche Post DHL has also been incorporated in the planning of a Beethoven foundation. The person at DHL who is responsible for the project is Professor Manfred Harnischfeger. The foundation, which will be responsible for the day-to-day artistic and technical operation of the Beethoven concert hall, is currently being established.
The federal, state and city governments are participating, as well as the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, Sparkasse KölnBonn, the Bonn cultural council and the three Bonn companies indicated above. The actual operation of the new music "Mecca" is also currently being planned and calculated in detail.
The annual costs and the money required to pay them will come later from the foundation's capital, income from the concerts and a subsidy from the city of Bonn, which is currently responsible for the Beethovenhalle municipal building.
The architecture - world-class
Architects that are highly esteemed internationally were invited in October 2008 to submit ideas and plans for a new concert hall. The objective: Building a concert hall that is on par with the best in the world both architecturally and acoustically.
Ten top-class but very different designs were submitted at the end of 2008 and evaluated by experts from every professional field. In the second phase of the mult-phase selection process led by Deutsche Post DHL, four architects were selected: Zaha Hadid, François Valentiny, Arata Isozaki and Richard Meier. They refined their ideas for the new Beethoven concert hall and presented the new models and plans at the end of May 2009.
A preliminary decision for the design of the new Beethoven concert hall was made on June 8 and 9, 2009, at the Post Tower in Bonn. The committe of experts that examined the entries selected designs from Zaha Hadid and Hermann&Valentiny to be finalists in the architect selection process. The two selected designs evinced both spectacular architecture and first-class acoustics.
The final decision on a design is planned for the end of 2009. Regardless of which entry is chosen: "The city of Bonn will get a new icon on the Rhine" - on this, all the experts agreed.
